When you record vinyl 45s and LP music you are bound to come across some sound tracks which skip
or are scratched. This is where the advantage of having your music recorded digitally on your
computer surfaces. Through the magic of technology, you can remove those skipping and scratched
sections.
Digital music recording programs allow you to open audio files and edit them. The audio file will be visible
when opened as a wavy line across the computer screen. Be sure to save the original file before you
attempt to edit it so you have a good copy in case you mess up the original recording. You can copy
and paste the song file to a folder with a file name of your choice. The program will allow you play
the file so you can locate the scratched portion on the screen. The flawed section should be visible
as an area of nearly identical peaks which you can highlight with the cursor using the mouse. After
highlighting, choose the cut option or use the delete button. The scratched area will be removed.
With practice the removed portion will be almost unnoticeable upon playback of the recording.
The photo on the right shows an audio file which has been recorded to the computer from a vinyl
record. Notice that there are two tracks. This is a stereo recording, if it were mono, there would
just be a single track. You can select any portion of the file to remove with the mouse and
cursor. The program you have may look somewhat different, but this is essentially what you will see in
a digital music file.
