Audio Digital Music Files - MP3 - WAV - WMA © 2006

When you record vinyl 45's and LPs to your computer, you will need to make a choice about which audio file format you want to use to save your music in. While there are a number of digital audio file formats used to store music files, the three most popular ones are WAV, MP3, and WMA.

You can convert WAVE files to MP3 and vice versa. Most recording programs will do this and you can find MP3 converter programs which will convert digital audio files from one format to the other. To do this on a recorder is a bit lengthy process. You first open the audio file and save it to the chosen format in another folder. A special converter program will usually allow you to convert several files at one time to a different format. It is usually best to start with a WAV file and convert to one of the other compressed file format.

The advantages of recording your vinyl LP or 45 record collection to a digital audio file format are numerous. The portability of the MP3 format, the completeness of the WAV format allow you to save your music collection in a number of ways and use it in ways that were difficult or impossible before.
