WAV Audio Files © 2006

Let’s examine the WAV file first. The letters WAV (.wav) stand for Waveform Audio. This was one of the first digital audio files developed by Microsoft and other leading computer companies. This audio file format is termed a "lossless" file, as nothing in the original musical selection is lost when the recording is made. As such, WAV files are very large because of the completeness of the recording.

When recording your vinyl 45's and LPs, it is probably best to save the original digital recordings as WAV audio files. This is the most complete file format available and will assure you that your music will be recorded in a high quality format. The large files can be stored externally on CD's or on an external hard drive.

Once you have recorded the vinyl music to the computer as WAV files, you may then transfer the audio digital files to CD's or to an external hard drive. You can then compress the WAV format to an MP3 or WMA file to keep on your computer's hard drive. It is always best to start with the large format WAV file or a professionally recorded CD when compressing to an MP3 or WMA file.
