Backing Up and Storing Your Digital Music Collection © 2006

If you have assembled a music collection by recording old vinyl records, converting audio CD's or other means, you should consider backing up those audio files to another storage medium in addition to having it on your hard drive. The reason for this is that if for some reason your hard drive crashes, you could lose your entire collection of music in an instant.

There are a number of options available for backing up your music collection. If your computer is equipped with a CD writer, you can copy your audio collection to CD's in either MP3 or WAV format. You can also burn the MP3 files to audio CD format for playing on any standard CD or DVD player. These CD's can then be converted back to MP3 files, if the need arises.

Another option is to install a secondary hard drive on your computer, if there is a slot for it. This is not difficult to do and most manufacturers of hard drives provide excellent instructions for doing this. The new hard drive will act as a large storage system, with no need to install an operating system on it. Store your music collection on this drive in addition to the main "C" drive as you record the music. Then, if for any reason your hard drive crashes, all your audio files will be available to copy and paste back into the main drive when you get it back up and running.
