Probably the easiest way to set up a backup storage system for your recorded digital music collection is to
use an external hard drive. These drives are simple to hook up and use. They have an AC adaptor which
will plug into the wall, and a connecting cord which will connect the drive to the computer using
a USB plug. Just plug into any USB connector on the computer and you are ready to go.
Another storage system is called an I/O hard drive enclosure. This is an aluminum case which holds a
standard 3.5 inch hard drive. The hard drive installs easily inside the enclosure and connects to
the computer with a USB cable. The drive is powered by a motor which is powered by a D/C converter
which plugs into a 110 volt wall plug. The unit then connects to the computer using a standard
2.0 USB connector. Everything but the hard drive, which must be purchased separately, is included
in the package. The unit is compact and the hard drive installs in the unit quickly. Multiple hard
drives can be used, with the extras stored on a bookshelf, or for ultimate safety, in a safe deposit
box, when not in the enclosure. Your music files can be downloaded and the hard drive removed.
Another drive can then be installed in the enclosure for other uses.
Whatever back up system you ultimately decide on, it is recommended that you back up both your
WAV and MP3 digital music collections for ultimate protection. You may also use a combination of CD's and external
hard drive if you wish. When you record your music collection to your computer, you have spent a
great deal of time and effort on the project, so make sure you protect that investment with a
proper backup storage system for the music.
