Radiant Heat To Melt Snow On Roof and Driveway
|
|

|
Imagine never having to shovel snow off your driveway or sidewalk again! Radiant heat
may also be used for snow removal on roofs, driveways and sidewalks. Both resistance
and hydronic heating systems may be used to melt the snow.
Resistance type snow melt systems for smaller driveways may consist of electric heat
cables installed under the concrete or asphalt. For areas under 2000 square feet this
type of system is usually economical. The cable used for this application is specially
made to withstand the heat, pressure and extreme weather conditions. Systems usually
include a sensor which will sense cold temperatures and moisture content of the air.
The correct readings will activate the heating systems automatically to melt the snow
on the driveway or sidewalk. There is usually a timer device which will shut the
system down after a certain period of time.
Hydronic radiant heat for larger driveways is a better choice, as it is usually more
economical for large areas. In this type of system piping is installed in the
driveway excavation before the concrete is poured. Similar control systems are
available to activate and shut off the heat.
Snow removal from roofs and rain gutters with radiant heating systems is also
possible. Two methods which work the best involve installing radiant heating cables
in the gutter or under the roof shingles. Automatic or manual activation devices
melt the snow from the roof and prevent snow buildup which can damage homes. Some
systems can be retrofitted into existing roofs to melt snow from the roof and
gutter. Other systems install in the gutter to melt the snow which accumulates
there.
Installing a radiant snow melting system in your gutter or roof will help prevent
snow buildup which leads to roof leaks which can damage the interior of your home.
