Warmzone Comfortile Electric Radiant Floor Heat

Radiant Floor Heat Index

We recently enclosed a porch, creating a sun room. To heat the additional space, we installed the Warmzone ComforTile electric radiant floor heat system. The system was relatively easy to install with good instructions and a minimum of components.

The components include ComfortTile strap, thermostat, electric heating cable, an alarm, and floor sensor. The scope of this article is just to provide some general informaion, as he complete installation is covered in the included manual.

The thermostat can be installed on any wall, as it relies on the floor sensor, not air temperature, for activation.

The Comfortile strap is a special strip which is glued to a concrete floor, or screwed to a wooden one. It has evenly spaced hooks which allow you to evenly string the electric radiant heating cable out over the floor. The instructions call for you to use a strong spray adhesive to secure it to the floor. Not being able to find the recommended adhesive, I used Liquid Nails. This worked, but I would recommend using the adhesive Warmzone specifies because it would be less messy.

The floor sensor is installed between the cables on the floor. It detects the temperature at floor level and activates the thermostat.
You then string the electric cables out over the floor, using the hooks on the strap as a guide. Hook up all the electrical connections as per the manual and you are ready to go.

We then installed ceramic floor tile over the electric radiant floor heat cables. Warmzone recommends two layers of thinset for this. The first layer covers the cable, the second to adhere the tiles. I elected to go with just one layer, extra thick. It worked. You will use a lot more thinset mortar than usual installing the tile. For one hundred square feet, our installation should have used somewhat less than fifty pounds. I used one hundred fifty pounds.

At any rate, the installation went well, the floor looks great and the electric radiant floor heat system works well in our sunporch.
