There are many types of solar powered lights. And first of all, I guess the question of what
a solar powered light is. After all, if the sun is shining, why would you need a
light?
A solar light is composed of four elements. A solar cell to collect the suns rays and converts
them into electricity. A rechargeable battery pack which stores the electrical energy and
store it. A photovoltaic sensor which measures the daylight, and turns the light on when
the light levels to a predetermined level. And a light unit which comes on when the
photovoltaic sensor tells it to and goes off when the sensor senses light returning, or
the battery pack runs down. In the better quality solar lights, the batteries can last up
to ten hours. This of course depends upon the light available during the recharging daytime
period. Cloudy days will provide less sunlight, shortening the amount of sunlight which
will be available to be converted into electricity, thus not recharging the batteries
fully.
Solar lights are ideal for garden and landscape use because they need no wiring, are easy
to set up, and are portable. You can move them as your outdoor needs change with very little
effort.
Solar garden lights are the most popular use of solar lighting. These are available in a
surprising variety of styles, colors, and sizes. A good solar garden light store or web
site will have solar path lights, solar carriage lights, solar hurricane lights and more.
The most popular solar garden and landscape lights are the solar path lights. These units
can be stuck in the lawn anywhere there is sun available. They are used to light garden
paths and sidewalks. They provide a soft glow of illumination which is ample to light a
garden path.
Solar floodlights are used to accentuate a garden feature or light an area with a little bit
more focused area. These can be used to light a landscape feature which is a bit hard to
light by other means. Solar floodlights are available in a wide array of styles and colors
so just about any landscaping need can be met.
As you can see, just about any landscape or garden need can be met with solar lighting.
You can light a path, highlight a specific feature, or simply create a neat lighting effect
around a garden pond or pool. The uses for solar powered lighting are limited by only your
imagination!
