The existing porch which is to be converted to a sun room is eight feet by sixteen feet and
faces due south overlooking our 1/2 acre pond.
A patio door and casement window provide access from inside the house to the porch, which is usually
littered with the paraphanalia connected with six cats, my outdoor work shoes, a table and four chairs
and other things. Three sides are open, the front to the patio and terrace garden which occupies
the hillside leading down to the pond. The east and west sides have stepping stone walkways to the
patio. The plan for building the sun room would be quite simple. Three sides would be enclosed with wood framing, four patio doors, two in front, one on each side, would provide lighting and access to the outdoors. These can easily be opened to make a screen porch when it is desired to hear the outdoor sounds. The existing patio door and casement window will be removed, as the new sun porch will be considered an addition to the house. A neighbor who has his own construction company is contracted for building the sun room. It could be a do it yourself project for someone who can do framing, but this is a skill which I have never acquired, so we will hire it our. Heat for the sun room will be provided by a radiant floor heating system installed under a ceramic tile floor. |
